GPO is a mail cluster that processes incoming mail for the swin.edu.au domain and provides the following services:
POP/IMAP
SMTP relaying and forwarding
Spam filtering and tagging
Virus scanning
Mailing lists
These mail services are available to Swinburne University of Technology staff members and affiliates. Students should use Live@edu
To use POP or IMAP on GPO requires that mail forwarding is turned OFF. Please check the OPAX Change Details page.
Mail client settings
POP
Host: gpo.swin.edu.au
Port: 110 or 995 (SSL)
IMAP
Host: gpo.swin.edu.au
Port: 143 or 993 (SSL)
SMTP
Host: gpo.swin.edu.au
Port: 25 or 2525 if ISP blocks port 25
Relaying mail via SMTP from outside 136.186.0.0/16 requires authentication
Authentication uses the OPAX UserID (Staff Number) and OPAX Password
For increased security, TLS or SSL is strongly recommended when connecting to these services.
Quotas
IMAP Quota = 1GB
Mail in INBOX is not under quota control, allowing mail to be received when the quota has been reached, however mail in INBOX that is older than user's swinMailExpiry LDAP setting (in days) is deleted.
Spam Filtering
GPO will reject mail connections from IP addresses which have a poor reputation. This includes known spam operators, hijacked PCs infected by worms/viruses and public end user IP address ranges.
Incoming mail is scanned for known viruses/spam/malware/scam/phishing signatures and if found, the mail is rejected. Other spam reduction techniques including greylisting are also used.
Mail that is accepted and delivered will contain several headers that can be used at the client level to filter probable spam.
X-Spam-Level
Contains a number of asterisk characters * indicating the probability of being Spam.
Example
X-Spam-Level: **********
X-Spam-Status
Contains the spam score and list of tests
Example
X-Spam-Status: score=10.0 tests=SUBJ_ALL_CAPS,MILLION_USD,DEAR_FRIEND,ADVANCE_FEE_2,ADVANCE_FEE_3,ADVANCE_FEE_4,SSR_05
For delivered mail with a high probability of being Spam, the subject header will contain the prefix [SUSPECTED SPAM].
